Classic Apple Crumble

Soft cinnamon apples under a buttery oat crumble topping. The dessert equivalent of a warm hug, and very forgiving to make.

Ingredients

  • 6 piece granny smith apples
  • 2 tablespoon caster sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 3/4 cup plain flour
  • 3/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 125 gram butter, chilled and cubed

Instructions

  1. 1Preheat the oven to 180°C and grease a 6-cup (1.5 litre) baking dish.
  2. 2Peel, core and slice the apples into 1cm-thick wedges.
  3. 3Toss the apples with the caster sugar, cinnamon and lemon juice, then tip into the dish.
  4. 4Mix the flour, oats and brown sugar in a bowl.
  5. 5Rub the chilled butter into the oat mixture with your fingertips until clumpy, like wet sand with pebbles.
  6. 6Scatter the crumble evenly over the apples without pressing down.
  7. 7Bake for 35 minutes, until golden on top and bubbling at the edges.
  8. 8Rest for 5 minutes, then serve warm with custard or ice cream.
