Golden Syrup Dumplings

Pillowy dumplings simmered in a buttery golden syrup sauce. Pure old-school comfort, ready in half an hour on the stovetop.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup self-raising flour
  • 40 gram butter, chilled and cubed
  • 80 millilitre milk
  • 1 piece egg
  • 1/2 cup golden syrup
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 50 gram extra butter
  • 500 millilitre water

Instructions

  1. 1Rub the chilled butter into the flour with your fingertips until it looks like breadcrumbs.
  2. 2Whisk the milk and egg together, then stir into the flour to make a soft dough.
  3. 3Combine the golden syrup, brown sugar, extra butter and water in a wide deep frying pan and bring to a gentle simmer.
  4. 4Drop heaped tablespoons of dough into the simmering sauce, leaving space between each — you should get about 12.
  5. 5Cover with the lid and simmer gently for 15 minutes without lifting the lid.
  6. 6Check one dumpling is cooked through, then serve warm in bowls with sauce spooned over and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
