Classic Buttermilk Ranch Dressing

The creamy, herby ranch everyone actually wants — buttermilk, three fresh herbs and just enough garlic. Better than any bottle and it takes ten minutes.

Ingredients

  • 125 millilitre buttermilk
  • 125 gram whole-egg mayonnaise
  • 60 gram sour cream
  • 2 tablespoon chives
  • 2 tablespoon flat-leaf parsley
  • 1 tablespoon dill
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 piece lemon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cracked black pepper

Instructions

  1. 1Finely chop the chives, parsley and dill.
  2. 2Crush the garlic clove to a paste with the salt using the flat of your knife.
  3. 3Whisk the mayonnaise, sour cream and buttermilk in a bowl until completely smooth.
  4. 4Stir through the herbs, garlic paste, onion powder, 2 teaspoons of lemon juice and the pepper.
  5. 5Taste and adjust with more lemon juice or salt — it should taste slightly too zingy on its own, because the salad will mellow it.
  6. 6Chill for 30 minutes so the herbs flavour the base. Keep in a screw-top jar in the fridge for up to 5 days.
