Slow Cooker Pea And Ham Soup

A smoky ham hock and a bag of split peas do all the work overnight. Thick, cheap and deeply comforting.

Ingredients

  • 500 gram dried green split peas
  • 1 piece smoked ham hock
  • 1 cup frozen diced onion
  • 1 cup frozen diced carrot
  • 2 piece bay leaves
  • 1 teaspoon cracked black pepper
  • 2 litre water

Instructions

  1. 1Rinse the split peas under the tap in a sieve, then tip them into the slow cooker.
  2. 2Add the ham hock, frozen onion, frozen carrot, bay leaves, pepper and water.
  3. 3Put the lid on and cook on low for 8 hours.
  4. 4Lift out the hock and bay leaves, pull the meat off with two forks and stir the meat back through the soup.
  5. 5Cool leftovers, then keep in the fridge for 4 days or freeze in single portions for 3 months. Reheat from frozen in the microwave for 5 minutes, stirring twice, and add a splash of water if it has thickened.
