A smoky ham hock and a bag of split peas do all the work overnight. Thick, cheap and deeply comforting.
Ingredients
- 500 gram dried green split peas
- 1 piece smoked ham hock
- 1 cup frozen diced onion
- 1 cup frozen diced carrot
- 2 piece bay leaves
- 1 teaspoon cracked black pepper
- 2 litre water
Instructions
- 1Rinse the split peas under the tap in a sieve, then tip them into the slow cooker.
- 2Add the ham hock, frozen onion, frozen carrot, bay leaves, pepper and water.
- 3Put the lid on and cook on low for 8 hours.
- 4Lift out the hock and bay leaves, pull the meat off with two forks and stir the meat back through the soup.
- 5Cool leftovers, then keep in the fridge for 4 days or freeze in single portions for 3 months. Reheat from frozen in the microwave for 5 minutes, stirring twice, and add a splash of water if it has thickened.
