Homemade Vanilla Custard Powder

A jar of golden custard powder that whisks into thick, glossy custard on the stove. Make it once and pudding night gets a lot easier.

Ingredients

  • 200 gram cornflour
  • 150 gram caster sugar
  • 100 gram full cream milk powder
  • 1 pinch ground turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. 1Sift the cornflour into a large bowl to break up any lumps.
  2. 2Whisk in the caster sugar, milk powder and salt.
  3. 3Add the pinch of turmeric and whisk until the powder is a soft even yellow.
  4. 4Spoon into a 750 millilitre jar and label with the date.
  5. 5TO USE: whisk 4 tablespoons of powder into 500 ml cold milk in a saucepan with 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Stir constantly over medium heat for 5 minutes until thick and bubbling. Serves 4.
  6. 6Store in an airtight jar in a cool dark cupboard for up to 6 months.
